Airport Transfers
Most safari packages include pick-up and drop-off from the nearest international airport (e.g., Kilimanjaro International Airport – JRO, Arusha Airport – ARK, or Abeid Amani Karume International Airport – ZNZ for Zanzibar)
Safari vehicle
This is a core service. You’ll travel in custom-built 4×4 safari vehicles (usually Toyota Land Cruisers or Land Rovers) with pop-up roofs for optimal game viewing and photography. These vehicles are designed for rough terrain.
Guiding Services
Professional Safari Guides/Driver-Guides: This is arguably the most crucial service. Experienced and knowledgeable guides are with you throughout your safari.
Accommodation
Safari accommodation varies greatly, catering to different budgets and preferences, but generally includes:
- Safari Lodges: Permanent structures offering hotel-like amenities, often with swimming pools, restaurants, bars, and comfortable rooms/chalets.
- Tented Camps: Ranging from “rustic” to “luxury” (glamping), these offer an immersive bush experience while providing comfortable beds, en-suite bathrooms .
- Mobile Camps: These camps are set up and dismantled as the safari moves, providing an authentic and flexible experience, especially good for following migrations.
- Basic Camping: For budget travelers, this involves smaller tents, sleeping mats, and shared, often basic, ablution facilities.
Meals and Refreshments
- Full Board (FB): Most safari packages are “full board,” meaning all meals (breakfast, lunch, and dinner) are included.
- Bush Meals: Operators often arrange special experiences like picnic lunches in the park or “bush dinners” under the stars.
- Snacks and Beverages: Bottled water is always provided during game drives. Many lodges and camps include tea, coffee, and sometimes even soft drinks. Alcoholic beverages are usually an extra cost.
- Catering Staff (for camping safaris): If you’re on a camping safari, a dedicated cook will prepare your meals.
Activities
- Game Drives: The primary activity, conducted in 4×4 vehicles, typically in the morning and afternoon/evening. Night drives are sometimes offered in private conservancies.
- Walking Safaris: Guided walks with an armed ranger, offering a more intimate experience of the bush, focusing on smaller flora, fauna, and animal tracks.
- Hot Air Balloon Safaris: A popular add-on in certain parks (like the Serengeti), offering breathtaking aerial views of the landscape and wildlife at sunrise, often concluding with a champagne breakfast.
- Boat Safaris/Canoeing: Available in parks with significant waterways (like Nyerere National Park or Lake Manyara), allowing for unique perspectives of aquatic wildlife.
ABOUT PLACES
Serengeti National Park: The most famous safari destination, known globally for the Great Migration, where millions of wildebeest, zebras, and gazelles traverse the plains. It’s also home to the “Big Five” (lion, leopard, elephant, rhino, buffalo) and offers unparalleled wildlife viewing year-round.
Ngorongoro Conservation Area: A UNESCO World Heritage Site featuring the spectacular Ngorongoro Crater, a massive volcanic caldera teeming with an exceptionally high density of wildlife, including the endangered black rhino. It’s often called “Africa’s Garden of Eden.”
Jozani Forest (Jozani Chwaka Bay National Park): The only national park on Zanzibar, famous for being the home of the rare Zanzibar red colobus monkeys. Visitors can trek through lush forests and mangrove swamps.
Nyerere National Park (formerly Selous Game Reserve): One of Africa’s largest protected wildlife areas. It features the Rufiji River, offering unique boat safaris alongside traditional game drives, providing opportunities to see hippos, crocodiles, and various other wildlife.
The Rock Restaurant: An iconic and highly photographed restaurant perched on a rock in the Indian Ocean near Michamvi Pingwe beach, accessible by foot at low tide and by boat at high tide, offering a unique dining experience.
